Start after the room check.

If you have not tried moving an existing lamp, begin with the no-purchase room-light check. This page takes the next step: translating an unresolved need into a specification you can compare with an exact product.

Name the task: handwritten notes, a book, a screen beside paper, or detailed craft work. Record the usable area, the normal working position and what currently fails. “I need the light to reach this page without taking my keyboard space” is more useful than “I need a better lamp.”

Sketch the fit before choosing the finish.

  1. Reserve the working area.

Put the actual book, keyboard or materials in place. Mark the space that must remain clear. Measure usable surface width and depth, not the whole room.

  2. Mock up the base.

Use a paper outline matching the candidate’s published footprint. Check whether the base, controls and cable can fit without obstructing the task, drawers or movement. A paper outline tests space, not lamp stability.

  3. Check the working reach.

Compare the proposed base position with the area you need lit. Ask for the maker’s dimension drawing and useful adjustment range. Maximum reach alone does not establish coverage or comfortable placement in your setup.

  4. Follow the power path.

Locate the appropriate outlet and allow a clear cable route. Verify voltage, adapter, connector, cable length and intended use. Do not improvise electrical modifications or route leads across walkways.

Compare the whole commitment.

A six-line buying brief

  • Space: base or clamp dimensions; surface and mounting compatibility.
  • Movement: required reach, adjustment and nearby obstructions.
  • Light: source, dimming method and published output. Ask what the measurement describes.
  • Controls: switch location and any required smart-system compatibility.
  • Service: replaceable source, parts and repair route. Integrated LED is not a promise of easy owner replacement.
  • Commitment: exact model, finish, included parts, delivered price, delivery window and return restrictions.

Write “unknown” beside missing information and resolve it before purchasing. A larger output number, a fashionable finish or a retailer ranking does not establish the best fit for your task.

Use a real model as a fit check.

Maker-document example / Not a hands-on review

Anglepoise 90 Mini Mini · Carbon Black

The US maker page lists a 4.7-inch base diameter, a maximum reach of 20.5 inches from base to shade and a 59-inch cable. It describes an integrated dimmable LED, an included adapter and no battery. The maker says it does not operate with smart sockets and switches.

A reason to consider: its documented compact footprint may fit a small surface. Check the actual adjustment and task coverage before choosing.

A reason to rule it out: your brief requires battery operation, smart-switch control or a reach the dimension drawing cannot support. Do not buy it expecting those features.

If the brief needs a different form

Lumens has a desk-and-task-lamp collection. Carry the same brief across candidates instead of choosing from appearance alone. This category link is not a selected model, a stock check or a recommendation of every product in the collection.

All essential requirements are evidenced

Compare the final delivered quote with your budget and read the seller’s current returns and warranty terms. A completed brief helps a decision; it does not guarantee comfort or performance.

A critical specification is still unknown

Keep the shortlist and ask the maker or seller the exact question. Unknown is not a pass. Do not assume a similar-looking model has identical fittings or controls.

The existing arrangement now works

Stop here. Record the setup and keep the money for a need you can name.

For another dimension of the same space, use the room-listening observation. Acoustic treatment is not a necessary add-on to a lamp purchase. This brief makes no medical, circadian or productivity claim.
